The Chooks

Roger
We have three hens and a rooster here on Riverwood Farm.  They are: Roger, the rooster - a very beautiful rooster but he needs to keep the girls in line! The girls are: Sharon, BJ and Dora.  Sharon and BJ are the white ones and Dora is a little black hen.

They normally range wherever they like on the farm but have taken to destroying my gardening efforts so I locked them up in their pen yesterday evening.  Sharon and BJ got out this morning and promptly tried to dig up the spuds - again!

I really like them roaming around the place and they follow me around when I'm outside but they have demolished my rhubarb patch and had a good go at the aforementioned spuds, so it's a spell of jail time for them - at least until I get their new mobile coop built (and gates built) then they'll live in the paddock next to the market garden and I can tow them in when I need them to clean up my garden beds.

I'm off now to clean up the rhubarb patch.

Well, I have started building the mobile coop.  I have two wheels and have ordered another two and I need to get the tow coupling thingy so that I can tow it around with the ATV.  I've cut out most of the pieces and when I've finished that, I'll prime and undercoat before I put it all together and paint it properly.  Yesterday, I attached the floor to the underframe and cut some of the roofing timber, and worked out how I'm going to attach the wheels and axles. I've been pondering what colour I should paint it as I thought maybe chooks don't like certain colours?  After extensive research (!) I found out that chooks don't seem to care what colour their coop is - inside or out - as long as it is done before they move in. So I'm thinking a nice, bright yellow outside, white inside and the nest boxes in dark blue.  Apparently, the darker colour in the nest boxes encourages them to lay then get out, and they don't sleep (and poop) in there.  I did read that some people put curtains over the nest boxes so that the chooks have somewhere dark and cosy to lay their eggs.  That might just be a bit too much though!  Mind you, red velvet curtains? ... mmmm...
